About the Work

The striking arrangement of zones of light and shade serves to bring out the geometric forms of the architecture – and thus reveals the influence of Cornelis Pronk. The extremely solid-looking brick masonry, on the other hand, is reminiscent of works by Milatz’s teacher Paulus van Liender ("Lisse near Haarlem" (Inv.-Nr. 3305)). The depiction of a small medieval castle near Haarlem, which was torn down just a few years after the execution of this drawing, already anticipates the romantic aesthetic of the nineteenth century.
