About the Work

Mariano Ceballos, called “El Indio”, had originally been a black slave in South America. From there he imported a form of bullfighting uncommon in Spain: he rode on the bull himself. He died in the arena in 1780 or 1781. Decades later, Goya still remembered this unusual connection between man and animal. The artist executed the lithograph in crayon, which he then partially scratched off again. The depiction has a strong spatial effect and brings the thrilling atmosphere of the bullfight arena to life.
