About the Work

Both of the drawings on this sheet focus on emotion. In both, Mary and Joseph are affectionately caring for their child. The sketch in the upper half shows Joseph stretching forward to gaze at the infant lying in Mary’s arms. The lower composition, depicting the two parents at the side of the sleeping child’s bed, has been executed more precisely.
