About the Work
‘Untitled (Furniture Sculpture)’ combines the readymade and geometrical abstraction, everyday banality and the autonomy of art. It brings together the two fundamental art movements of the twentieth century, exemplified by Marcel Duchamp and Kazimir Malevich. John M. Armleder’s painting moves from the canvas into the room and onto the chests of drawers. Where does the picture begin and reality end? However, the apparent effortlessness is misleading. Behind the playful juxtaposition of ‘high’ and ‘low’ lurks a critical questioning of our concept of art.
