About the Work

Sculpture, painting, and drawing were closely interwoven in Giacometti’s oeuvre. Again and again, he recorded views of his studio. As in a still life, sculptures stand on a table next to everyday objects in what looks like a chance arrangement. The artist used a pencil to trace and retrace the outlines of these objects so familiar to him. The density of the individual line and the forceful effect of the graphite serve to structure the composition and lend it light and shade. The gradual description in the drawing medium re-enacts the process of sight.

About the Acquisition

The Städel Museum has the photographer, psychotherapist, philanthropist, and long-time Frankfurt resident Ulrike Crespo (1950–2019) to thank for more than ninety works ranging from classical modernism to American pop art. The paintings, drawings, and prints by Wassily Kandinsky, Otto Dix, Oskar Schlemmer, Max Ernst, Jean Dubuffet, Cy Twombly, and others originally belonged to the holdings of her grandfather, the Darmstadt-based industrialist Karl Ströher (1890–1977), who amassed an extensive art collection after World War II.
