About the Work
Only a handful of drawings and paintings by the wealthy amateur artist Hendrik Schepper have come down to us. Here he depicted a famous building in his native Amsterdam, the Kloveniersdoelen – house of the marksmen’s guild – for which Rembrandt had painted his Night Watch in 1642. It is not known who Schepper learned his artistic skills from. His atmospheric treatment of light and shade is reminiscent of Cornelis Pronk (for comparison have a look at Pronk's "The Binnenhof in The Hague" (Inv.-Nr. 3132)). In comparison to the latter’s works, however, this drawing is more intricately detailed.
