About the Work

This extremely dynamic composition is thought to represent the “War in Heaven” – that is, a battle between the powers of good and evil, heaven and hell. As there is no known painting after this drawing, we cannot determine the motif with absolute certainty. Dashed off with forceful strokes of the pen, the warring figures form a whirlwind of bodies. To distribute the light and shade, the artist took a brush in hand.
