Ballte of the Sexes

Man and woman, active and passive, rational and emotional, culture and nature, state and family: it is not possible to classify unequivocally what is masculine and what is feminine without resorting to traditional gender associations. Numerous works in the visual arts have investigated gender roles, ideals and conflicts.
The artworks displayed here and many others were on show at the Städel Museum in the exhibition ‘Geschlechterkampf: Franz von Stuck bis Frida Kahlo’ (Battle of the Sexes: From Franz von Stuck to Frida Kahlo).
