Frankfurt am Main was first mentioned in records in AD 794. It has been one of the most important urban centres in Germany since the Middle Ages. As such, the city has not only been a place where artists lived and worked; it has also provided them with a wealth of subjects. The Städel Collection includes numerous works that show views of Frankfurt.
