Daniel Richter

Daniel Richter was born in Eutin, Germany, in 1962. From 1991 to 1995 he studied at Hamburg’s noted art school, the Hochschule der bildenden Künste, under Werner Büttner and worked as an assistant to Albert Oehlen. In addition he designed record covers for the music labels Buback and Chicks on Speed Records. In 2003 he taught in Hamburg as a guest professor. Since the mid-1990s Richter has been represented in many exhibitions around the world and has won various prizes. In 2004 he assumed a professorship at the art academy Universität der Künste in Berlin, from which he resigned in 2006. In that same year he was named a professor at Vienna’s premier art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste. Richter initially painted abstract works, and it was only around the year 2000 that he began to work more figuratively. His paintings, often in large format, are characterised by intense colours and painterly traces, and evade any unambiguous interpretation. Richter lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin.
