About the Work
Like many of the other works in the collection of Johann Friedrich Städel, this vivacious drawing of two angels was long considered a work by the renowned Bolognese artist Guido Reni. Many of those attributions have been corrected over the course of time. That is also the case here. Now associated with Guercino, this sheet is distinguished by its free, almost playful execution. The cursory lines—now darker, now lighter—and light wash bring the figures to exuberant life.
