About the Work

The assemblages of Isa Genzken are simultaneously attractive for their reflective surfaces and unsettling in their fragmentary combinations. The artist's works examine the window as a threshold between inside and outside. In 'Wind I (David)', Genzken complements the reflective film with photographs, plastic films and spray paint, which appear three-dimensionally in the wealth of material in her space. The urban graffiti aesthetics are combined with the photographic profile view of Michelangelo's 'David'. The art-historical quotation points to the classical genre of sculpture, to which Genzken's works, originally inspired by Minimal Art, add an independent position which remains linked to the sculptural.
