Biography

Helmut Middendorf was born in 1953 in Dinklage, Germany. After graduating from secondary school he worked for two years as a rock musician. From 1973 to 1979 he studied at Berlin’s arts college, the Hochschule der Künste. He first concentrated on experimental films, but then joined Karl Horst Hödicke’s class and began to paint. In 1977 he established the Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin with Rainer Fetting, Salomé and Bernd Zimmer, all of them Hödicke’s pupils. There they showed their own works and provided a space for performances. In 1979 Middendorf was offered a post at his alma mater teaching experimental film. With Fetting, Salomé and Zimmer he had his first exhibition in 1980 at the Haus am Waldsee in Berlin. The artists soon became recognised internationally, and Middendorf was awarded a stipend that allowed him to spend time in New York. He lives and works in Berlin and Athens.
